Inhalt: Sie haben Englischkenntnisse aus der Schulzeit und möchten diese wieder auffrischen? Sie haben länger nichts für ihr Englisch getan und möchten den Wiedereinstieg schaffen? Dann ist dieser Kurs das Richtige für Sie.

Der Brückenkurs "English pre-intermediate refresher" A2-B1 wird Sie an das B1 Niveau heranführen und Sie auf den Besuch weiterer Sprachkurse auf dem B1 Niveau vorbereiten. Im Kurs werden Kompetenzen in den Fertigkeiten Hören, Sprechen, Lesen und Schreiben vermittelt, grammatische Strukturen erlernt, Wortschatz systematisch erweitert und Vorkenntnisse vertieft. Ziel des Kurses ist es, häufig gebrauchte Ausdrücke zu verstehen und sich in routinemäßigen Situationen zu verständigen, wenn es um vertraute Dinge aus Uni, Arbeit, Freizeit usw. geht, sich einfach und zusammenhängend über vertraute Themen und persönliche Interessengebiete zu äußern und über Erfahrungen und Ereignisse zu berichten.
 
Zusätzlich zu den Unterrichtsstunden mit dem Dozenten besteht der Kurs aus obligatorischen E-Learning-Einheiten (ca. 30 Minuten pro Woche), die vom Kursleiter/von der Kursleiterin speziell für diesen Kurs erstellt und korrigiert werden.

Technische Voraussetzungen:

Inhalt: In this course, you will learn to understand the main points of speech, radio and TV programs on current events, and topics of personal and academic interest. You will practice reading different kinds of texts that consist of everyday and job-related language. You will also learn how to write simple connected texts. You will improve your speech interaction and production skills, using a wide variety of activities and exercises on topics that are familiar, of personal interest, or pertinent to everyday life. Grammatical points include state and action verbs, past simple and continuous, past perfect, used to and would, future forms, expressing plans, intentions, and predictions (will & be going to), real conditionals and modifiers.

Inhalt: In this course, you will learn to understand the main points of speech, radio and TV programs on current events, and topics of personal and professional interest. You will practice reading different kinds of texts that consist of everyday and job-related language. You will also learn how to write connected texts. You will improve your speech interaction and production skills, using a wide variety of activities and exercises on topics that are familiar, of personal interest, or pertinent to everyday life. Grammatical points include noun phrases, articles, possessives, reflexive pronouns, modals of probability, reported speech, reported thoughts, and reported questions.
 
Bei bestandener Klausur wird nach diesem Kurs das Niveau B1 des GER (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen) abgeschlossen. Die Klausur findet in der letzten Kursstunde statt. Für Studierende, die ein offizielles UniCert-Zertifikat für das Niveau B1 erwerben möchten und deren Anwesenheit im Kurs bei mindestens 80% lag, findet zusätzlich eine mündliche Prüfung statt. Die Anmeldung für die Prüfung erfolgt auf der Homepage des Sprachenzentrums.

The course will help learners to:
- practice speaking skills (opening and ending conversations; changing the subject; making comments; asking questions)
- Learn how to present an argument, and use connecting vocabulary
- Learn how to interrupt and ask for clarification
 
Depending on the language level of each group the topics and the path of discussions may vary and be adapted individually. Varieties of video and audio presentations will also deepen the themes. Active participation of learners is taken for granted.

You will learn to present and explain your points of view on a wide range of topics related to your field of interest. Grammatical points include expressing habits, modal auxiliary verbs, expressions with modal verbs, hypothesizing, articles, determiners, and demonstratives.
 
Bei bestandener Klausur wird nach diesem Kurs das Niveau B2 des GER (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen) abgeschlossen. Die Klausur findet in der letzten Kursstunde von 10:00-12:15 Uhr statt. Für Studierende, die ein offizielles UniCert-Zertifikat für das Niveau B1 erwerben möchten und deren Anwesenheit im Kurs bei mindestens 80% lag, findet zusätzlich eine mündliche Prüfung statt. Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who wish to improve their English skills by reading, writing and critically analyzing formal texts for academic purposes.

You will learn:
- the most important features of English academic language
- how to develop and present your ideas and arguments both verbally and in an appropriate writing style
- the words and expressions you need for academic writing
- the secrets of academic writing style: paragraphing and structuring your texts

whilst having a chance to:
- get plenty of speaking and writing practice
- see your own step-by-step progress over the semester
- and have some fun in the process!

Participants will be expected to contribute actively in discussions during the semester and complete coursework assigned, as the course is designed to build on skills learnt each week.

Inhalt: In this course, you will learn to summarise information and arguments from different spoken and written sources, and present them coherently and concisely. You will practice reading long and complex factual and literary texts and specialized articles. You will also learn to express your points of view in a clear and well-structured manner. You will practice writing about complex subjects in formal and informal letters, essays, stories, and business reports. You will improve your fluency and spontaneous expression by taking an active part in classroom discussions and learn how to use the language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes. You will learn to present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects.
 
Bei bestandener Klausur wird nach diesem Kurs das Niveau C1 des GER (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen) abgeschlossen. Academic Discussion in Social Sciences (B2/C1) (für FB 03)

Objective: To improve fluency in academic discussion in a range of topics by employing wider and more formal vocabulary in Social/Political Science topics.  To build students’ confidence in facilitating and sustaining the discussion in seminars and workshops.

Description: This course goes beyond ‘small talk’ to provide participants with the opportunity to have an in-depth discussion over several weeks on Social/Political Science relevant topics. Articles, podcasts and videos to feed discussion will be offered, which students should read, listen and watch prior to attending class.  However, students should also take the initiative to find their own material and be able to share this with the group.

Within small groups, students will practise initiating and leading discussion, and eliciting input from others. Participants will learn how to distil and summarise key points from their discussion and there will be plenary sessions for informal presentations given by each group.  Any grammatical instruction or correction will be addressed at this time by the instructor. In addition, students will learn phrases and use vocabulary more suited to a formal and academic context.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment for this course, however to be awarded with the 3 credit points, students are required to attend 80% of the course, prepare in advance of each session by completing any reading given and participate actively in class.

Academic Writing in Social Sciences (B2/C1) (für FB 03)

Objective: To equip participants with a transferrable writing toolkit to support and develop their academic writing skills; and to improve communication skills in a formal context.

Description: This course is aimed at students with a higher level of English and designed to assist them in polishing their academic writing. Therefore, it will not review the very basics of grammar but will build elements of academic writing such as crafting strong introductions, structuring paragraphs and presenting arguments clearly and succinctly.  Participants will learn techniques for paraphrasing and practise summarising to avoid plagiarism; and use tools such as noun phrases, synonyms and connectors to achieve clarity and formality in their writing.

The course is interactive and practical, offering participants the opportunity to engage in in-depth conversation on topics relevant to the discipline of social and political sciences.  We will differentiate between formal and informal English and when to employ the appropriate register, both in the spoken and written form.  Accurate grammar will underpin our activities and there is flexibility in this course to address specific needs of the group should any issues be identified.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment for this course, however, to be awarded with the 3 credit points, students are required to: attend 80% of the course, prepare in advance of each session and complete two written assignments.

Inhalt:  Doctors and medical professionals from all around the world need to speak English clearly and understandably to their international patients and colleagues. Enhance your medical communication skills with this course set at C1 level of English.

The course will include:

  • Presentation skills (conferences/cases)
  • Discussions
  • Intercultural competence and patient approach and communication
  • Differences between British/American and German usage and spelling of medical terminology
  • Scientific research

A needs analysis will be undertaken in the first lesson but potential focused topics may be:

  • Discussing diseases and conditions
  • Describing symptoms
  • Taking clinical histories

 Consistent and active participation by the class members is essential.
